'Delhi Belly'
DELHI BELLY
A film that dares to be irreverent & funny..........
Aamir Khan's Delhi Belly is all set for worldwide release on July 1st, 2011.
And, already, there's a huge interest about the film among the critics as well as his fans.
The theatrical teaser promo of Delhi Belly premiered on January 21st, accompanying the screenings of "Dhobi Ghat - Mumbai Diaries", which too was Aamir's home production, and was directed by his wife, Kiran Rao.
With the release date approaching momentum has gathered on the makers' part as well. The film's first look, poster and music have already captured our imagination in the last few days. Delhi Belly is directed by Abhinay Deo, and has been scripted by Akshat Verma. The film has in its cast Imran Khan, Vir Das, Poorna Jagannathan, Kunal Roy Kapoor, Shenaz Treasurywala, Vijay Raaz, and Rahul Pendkalkar.
The music for the film has been scored by Ram Sampat and the lyrics have been penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
The cast and the crew have been rather tight-lipped about the film while the filming was on, and post-production work on it continued. Speculations were rife on the content, believed to be catering to the adult audience instead of the conventional family audience.
Originally, the film was supposed to be directed by the Swedish director Robert Nylund, but things didn't quite work out, and then entered Abhinay Deo, who has been associated with numerous ads of repute. Ranbir Kapoor was pencilled in at first, but that too did not work out, and Imran, Aamir's nephew was shortlisted as a cast member.
The film is till date the boldest one that has been produced by Aamir Khan, and Imran himself has said that his character is quite 'colorful' and he'll be seen diving his attention between Poorna Jagannathan and Shehnaz Treasurywala.
It is an irreverent comedy indeed, but Aamir Khan has refuted the claims made by some sections of the media that Delhi Belly is a sex comedy.
In fact, the character played by Imran does not only indulge in two-timing, but his teenage fanbase might be shocked to know that he swears, drinks, has several addictions and is totally lewd and despicable.
The grunge-rock song 'Bhaag D. K. Bose' from the soundtrack of the film has already become a sensation of sorts.
It has caught on with the youth as the latest anthem of rebellion & irreverence.
The song is surely has surely catchy, plus it has weirdly and cleverly twisted a common Bengali name into an expletive. Quite a stunt, I must say!

Eagerly awaiting the release!!!!
DELHI BELLY might be an urban film, a yuppie film, a niche film, an irreverent and a bold film.... but it'll still stand out and will rock no doubt, as it has Aamir Khan backing it, wholeheartedly. The Aamir Khan banner might not have been associated with anything like this before, yet it'll be a landmark film, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
This is how the official media release on 'Delhi Belly' puts it:
Tashi, Arup and Nitin -- flatmates, buddies and partners in crime. Tashi is to get married in a month but still doesn't know if his fiancé is THE ONE! Arup can't make up his mind who he wants to kill first -- his girlfriend who has just dumped him or his stupid, annoying boss whose idea of creativity is sketching a smiling banana! And Nitin is about to discover that eating delicious tandoori chicken off a street vendor is going to give him the worst case of Delhi Belly he's ever known! Three regular blokes, living the regular life EXCEPT for one small detail -- they are on the hit list of one of the world's deadliest crime syndicates. Will they be able to get away before the shit hits the roof and it comes crashing down?
'Delhi Belly' is thus touted to be "the meanest comedy" one is ever likely to see!
Am all eager to hold onto my chair and brace myself, as "MADNESS is about to begin"
in theatres, July 1st, 2011!!!!
Much impressed by the buzz created by this movie already.
Needless to say that I'm going to check out 'Delhi Belly' as soon as it releases.
S#!T Happens - that's the tagline for the film "Delhi Belly", and that tells us all what to expect..... it's surely going to rock as one of the wackiest and craziest film ever!
The young and energetic cast makes me a great deal more hopeful than the director, whose "Game" was a dud.
The website for the film goes on to add: "S#!T Happens but when friends come in the picture S#!T is taken over by 'FUN'"
- and I am over-eager to have fun at the movies this summer!
When I first saw the theatrical trailer (teaser) of DELHI BELLY, I knew that this was genuinely going to be a hatke film. I remember finding many in the theater acting squeamishly as the sound of flushing was heard on the soundtrack, and the visual of the guy's discomfiture seated on the WC filled the screen. And, despite the introductory voiceover in the promotional by Big B, the self-deprecatory humor mode and the broadly irreverent tone had been set.
With the release date approaching, and the wild promos and the music video on air, our excitement knows no bounds..... and I speak on behalf of many of my friends.
I wish the entire team of
DELHI BELLY: S#!T Happens all the best!
Quite funnily, the latest Big B starrer is also slated to release on the same date...... the fun begins!
Even while laughing my heart out at the flatulence humor, in the theatrical promo for the film (I had gone to see 'Dhobi Ghat'), I had no idea what this film was really all about, I confess.
I even looked up the dictionary for the meaning of the expression 'Delhi belly' and then read that it refers to the bowel disorder, sometimes of the extreme kind, experienced in a foreign or unaccustomed to setting, as in case of the foreigners eating at the Chandni Chowk or Connaught Place street joints of Delhi.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that the film doesn't offend the filmgoers here in India by the nature of humor (as the flush tank crashes on the person seated on the toilet seat in the teaser!).
Best of luck, Aamir!
Aamir Khan has himself admitted on his blog that his production house is known for the inspiring films, for clean (whatever he meant by it) family entertainment, and he was genuinely worried that DELHI BELLY might in a single stroke destroy the goodwill created in ten long years. But I'd like to tell him,
"Sir, you do not need to be peeved. The quirky script by Akshat Verma had been found compelling in the first place, by you. And that is enough to reassure us that you have stood back this project the way it aptly deserved, giving it your able support and the director Abhinay Deo fleshing out the original vision. It's surely going to stand out as a competent film on its own.
All the best!"
Awesome, yaar!!!
You've surely whetted my appetite for this apparently zany flick!
Delhi Belly [Shit Happens] has created quite a buzz in the last few months. The songs of the film, just released, have become a rage.
I think Aamir has been rightly upbeat about the soundtrack. The music is truly awesome. The songs are path-breaking (as should be the movie). It's an album every young person would love to own. Its tracks are likely to feature in the songlist of every bloke's iPod.
I bet the 'Bhaag D. K. Bose' and other numbers, which have offended a section of the listeners, would be sounding more fitting when one listens in the context of the film.
In fact, Aamir needn't have been so apologetic about the irreverent and 'unclean' language of the film. I can understand that he tries to come clean as a maker of films for family audiences. One must remember that a film should be appreciated in terms of the genre in which it's made, and our audience aremature enough to handle all genres.
Kewl post, Ani!
I am sure you are happy to note that Aamir goes international yet again.... his "Delhi Belly" is all set to be screened at the London Indian Film Festival (LIFF) on June 30th! May he, and his film, get all the deserved acclaim.
Imran looks rocking in this film.... and his attitude in the grunge-rock music video is making me appreciate him all the more..... but the surprise package is Vir Das..... it seems he's born again thanks to 'Delhi Belly'!
Now that the film has released, here's my take - candid, and unbiased:
DELHI BELLY rocks! It works perfectly as an irreverent adult comedy, probably the first of its kind in the urban sub-genre, in Bollywood.
In one of the promotionals it had been rightly said that this film is not only for a niche audience, but it is also for the very same youth who have gone crazy listening to the track "Bhaag D K Bose" from the film and have assigned it the anthem status. The song is in fact the barometric test, if one loves the song then only one'll love the film, and will even watch it many a time more, with one's like-minded friend groups. The film is probably the most verbally explicit (some might even say 'gross') film that has passed the censors without a single 'beep' (the all too familiar gagging sound to blanket the utterance)! I guess it is all thanks to the marketing strategy adopted by Aamir Khan (he has even had a Censor PRO who has been named in the end credits).
Imran Khan, Vir Das, Kunal Roy Kapoor, Rahul Singh and Vijay Raaz have given flawless performances. The music by Ram Sampath is more than apt. And the Jason West's cinematography is bang-on on for a film like this. Akshat Verma's irreverent humor works perfectly but I'd say that more credit has to be given to the entire team's efforts to make it work. DELHI BELLY is a shocker, especially, coming from Aamir Khan's production house (I still don't know why he had to back it.... of all people!), but it is a rocker as well. The young boys and girls (and all the others who happen to be young at heart) will laugh out loud and have a ball watching this film. And, Aamir would just be smiling to himself, having broken yet another barrier (as a producer, as well as an 'item bomb' - the Disco Fighter - in the film), I guess.
Aamir Khan had dared to be different once again with this film, and though many thought that his pushing-the-envelope strategy backfired as it did not exactly pay rich dividends, I beg to differ.
The success of DELHI BELLY is emphasized by the fact that film has now been made in Tamil as 'Settai' (Prank), which is again getting dubbed in Telugu as 'Naughty Boys'.
'Settai' has been directed by R.Kannan, and the cast includes Arya, Hamsika Motwani, Anjali, Santhanam and Premji Amaren.
Imran Khan has acted in just 11 films till now, many snub him saying that he is too choosy - though I admire him for being so..... and 'Delhi Belly' is his best, according to me.
